Tupac Amaru Shakur, also known by his stage names 2Pac and Makaveli, was an American rapper and actor. As of 2007, Shakur has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York to Afeni Shakur and Billy Garland. He had a difficult childhood spent in the company of people who had been convicted of serious crimes and had been imprisoned. He had been exposed to violence from an early age. He attended Tamalpais High School and poetry classes with Leila Steinberg. His first breakthrough in music came in 1991 as a member of the group Digital Underground. In the same year he received individual recognition for his album “2Pacalypse Now,” but this album was also the beginning of his notoriety as a leading figure of the gangster permutation of hip-hop, with references to cop killing and sexual violence. His solo movie career also began in this year with Juice and in 1992 he co-starred with Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice.
