As the hunt for the next Bond continues, a key figure in the book world says the movies just aren’t on par with other major franchises.

Author Charlie Higson, who launched the Young Bond series in 2005, is shaking and stirring things up in the 007 universe, saying that the franchise has lost its way and that the best Bond movies now feature a man who goes by Hunt, Ethan Hunt.

Speaking with The Times, Higson gave his thoughts on what he thinks is the best Bond movie…and it’s not even a Bond movie. Higson cited one of his main complaints: “They overcomplicate him…The most successful ‘Bond movies’ are now the Mission Impossibles. There is no inner-life, just a ‘Woah’. Higson also criticized the 2021’s No Time to Die, criticizing its mandatory sequential watching. Higson also criticised the 2021’s No time to die

Bond film, which required sequential viewing. M, Q, Moneypenny. The fact that Mission Impossible has only a quarter as many installments as the Bond franchise shows how strong these films are. It is, along John Wick the best action series going. But it also shows how strongly Higson believes in how easily a character they respect (or used to respect) can be removed. It took more than just the Jason Bourne movies, which were once hailed as the next Bond films, to achieve this. Do you think that Mission Impossible is now the most popular spy franchise?
