May your knife chip and break. The sci-fi fantasy Dune series has been a staple of sci-fi for decades, with many screen adaptions being made. Dennis Villeneuve’s first film, Dune Part 2 , was a huge hit in 2021 and wowed audiences around the world. The sci-fi universe takes place millennia in the future. It revolves around a highly valuable substance called Spice, and the Atreides Family who have been sent to oversee the planet where it is produced (more specifically the boy named Paul Atreides). Paul was supposed to be a woman and the messiah for his people. However, his birth as a male gave him and his parents many enemies and sent the entire sci-fi world into a spiral. The film was epic enough to warrant a sequel, which has been hyped up by fans since its announcement. So, with the sequel finally set to hit theaters at the end of this year, let’s take a look at everything we know about

Dune: Part II.Plot

dune part 2

The number one thing that fans will probably be most hyped about for

Dune: Part II is the fact that the first film firmly established the ‘world’ that the characters inhabit. I.e. The plot of the movie will be the most important focus of the film. So, that leaves the plot of the movie will be the most important focus of the film (which is still technically true of the first, but a lot of the information given was for learning purposes rather than just to push the story forward). That said, fans have already been given a little bit of information about what to expect for the plot of the sequel. Audiences know that

Dune PartI- ended on a cliffhanger with the Atreides family in shambles and Paul and his mother fleeing to the Fremen and living among the natives of Arrakis. The film’s synopsis is: Dune Part II will explore Paul Atreides’ mystic journey as he unites Chani and the Fremen on a quest for revenge against the conspirators that destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can forsee. While the description doesn’t give any hints to minor details, it assures audiences that they can expect a truly heroic tale to play out on screen – one that Villeneuve has promised will focus more on both Paul and Chani and the journey that they take together, rather than just trying to make Paul the sole hero.Cast

Just like it’s predecessor, Dune: Part II

has an exemplary cast with no less than half a dozen household names, as well as several other notable actors and actresses to round out the entire cast. Timothee Chalamet will reprise his role as Paul Atreides, and Zendaya, the character that is the core of the Dune story. Chalamet and Zendaya will not only be returning, but Josh Brolin will also be reprising his role as Gurney Halleck. Dave Bautista will play Glossu Rabban Harkonnen. Rebecca Ferguson will reprise her role as Lady Jessica Atreides. Stellan Skarsgard will portray Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Javier Bardem will reprise his role as Stilgar. Charlotte Rampling will reprise her Reverend Mother Mohiam. As of this writing, no other characters from the original movie are confirmed to be appearing in the sequel.

Sadly, two majors A-listers from the prior film in Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa (reportedly) will not be returning for the sequel. Both Isaac and Momoa who played Duke Lero Atreides, and Duncan Idaho respectively, tragically died in the first film. Dune fans know that it is possible to resurrect characters in the Dune universe using a technologically advanced cloning technique called ghola. This technology would allow Momoa and Isaac to return as their beloved characters. However, neither character did so in the first Dune novel so the story would need to be adjusted.

Despite the loss of two major Hollywood stars, Dune Part II wasted little time in finding new prominent stars to fill the gaps. Florence Pugh continues to be a star by taking on the role as Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam III who will be played Christopher Walken. Austin Butler, who was recently nominated for an Oscar, will play Feud-Rautha. In addition, Lea Seydoux has been cast as Lady Margot, Souheila Yacoub has been cast as Shishaki (a Fremen leader), and it’s also been reported that Tim Blake Nelson has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Even though the franchise has already lost Oscar Isaac and Jason Momoa (two of the current most marketable actors in Hollywood) Villeneuve stepped right up and created another all-star cast, and it’s one that fans will assuredly be blown away by.

Everything ElseAs the film is set to be one of the biggest of the year (arguably the

biggest) it’s understandable that a lot of what’s going on with the movie is being kept under wraps. Fans have been given some tidbits to tide them over until the film hits theaters. It’s no secret that Dennis Villeneuve will return to direct the sequel. He wrote the film with Jon Spaihts. It’s also worth noting that Eric Roth, who was credited for helping to write

Dune Part I

, did not appear to have contributed to the sequel. Another obvious fact (but worth mentioning to those who still may not know), but the film was based on the 1965 sci-fi novel of the same title written by Frank Herbert. Villeneuve’s vision is the latest media adaptation of the franchise, and he chose to split the book into two separate films. The sequel to the Dune film was filmed a year after the success of the Dune

film, on July 18, 2022. The filming took place in Jordan as well as Abu Dhabi, Budapest and Italy. It was completed in December. The film’s current release date is November 3, 2023. It was originally scheduled for October, but then pushed back to November 17, 2023. While the release date seems to finally be set in stone, audiences have to be aware that releasing in November gives Dune: Part II some serious competition.

By releasing November, the film will have to go up against other tentpole movies like The Marvels from the MCU as well as the Hunger Games prequel

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. The movie will also be competing against the animated Disney film Wish, Trolls band Together

and the third film of the trolls series. The movie is capable of standing on its own and is not necessarily targeted at the same audience, but releasing it next to three major franchises, as well as an animation Disney film, will undoubtedly pull away some audience members in the following weeks. This spin-off will not feature any of the characters from the current Dune movies and will shift the focus thousands of years in to past, serving as a prequel. However, this spin-off won’t involve any of the characters from the current Dune movies and will shift the focus thousands of years in the past, serving as a prequel.Dune: Part I may not have made the societal impact that some other recent sci-fi/fantasy franchises have (such as The Lord of the Rings or the MCU) but with the pandemic died down and audiences returning to theaters in droves, it’s safe to say that Dune: Part II will be one of the biggest cinematic releases of the year.
