The Little Mermaid came in under the century mark with a $95.5 million 3-day haul, however that number is expected to grow to around $117 million for its 4-day debut.
Updated With Mondays Numbers:
As expected, families took the extended weekend to spread out their trip to the theater, resulting in The Little Mermaid pulling in an estimated $117.5 million 4-day gross, making it the fifth highest grossing Memorial Day weekend opening of all time. Fast X grew to $28.6 million moving the franchise past the $7 Billion mark, making it the fifth highest grossing franchise of all time while Guardians Vol. 3 added an additional $6 million to its weekend gross. All the other films saw an increase of approximately $2-3 million. It will be interesting to see how these films fare in the weeks ahead, with stiff competition. Check out the chart at the bottom of the page for updated numbers on all ten films.
Original Post:
Disney’s live action remake of their 1989 classic The Little Mermaid easily claimed the top spot this weekend with a reported $95.5 million 3-day take. This number is below our $110 million forecast, but it is important to note that this is a holiday weekend and that the number will grow to $117 million at the end of Monday. This is great news for a movie that has received decent reviews, if not overwhelming ones (including our own Chris’ 6/10). The real question is how it will perform over the next few weeks. It isn’t like a Super Mario Bros. Movie that has had the family market place to itself for several weeks and reaped the rewards, The Little Mermaid will face stiff competition in the coming weeks from Sony’s Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse next week followed by Transformers, Flash and even Disney’s own Elemental. It will be interesting to see whether this film reaches the billion dollar mark of other Disney live-action remakes. It will need to. With a reported budget of $250 million, it will. The great news is that audiences are loving the film. It has received an A cinemascore as well as a 95% audience rating. Halle Bailey was absolutely fantastic in the role of Ariel, and the visuals of the film were excellent. This is one of the best 3D convertions I have seen for a Disney live-action remake. It had a lot of depth and some great pop-outs, with Flounder literally floating in front of you. Disney should continue to release 3D Blu-ray discs, as this would be a demonstration-level disc.
Were You Invited to the Family Barbecue? If you were, then you’ll know that Fast X
came in second with an estimated $23,02 million. This is a significant 66% drop compared to its soft opening. These drops are typical for the franchise, as The Fast & Furious films tend to be as front-loaded as comic book movies. This is actually the second largest drop for the franchise in the domestic box office, after 2021’s 11001010F9 The Fast Saga. This film is obviously playing the opposite game to The Little Mermaid, as its overseas numbers are very solid. This will hopefully propel this $340 million budgeted movie into profitability. To put this into perspective, the production of Avatar – The Way of Water cost between $350 to $400 million and it needed to reach $2 billion in worldwide sales to be considered profitable. It did, because it’s Avatar. As much as I love the Fast and Furious films they are not Avatar. I’ve never heard of anyone claiming that the budget for Fast X was used to film the next (and supposedly final) chapter. I know that The Fast & The Furious has always been Universal’s most successful franchise, but the person who approved a $340m budget for this film may not be able to find a job after all. 3 continues its strong run at the box-office with another $19.9 millions added to its domestic total of $299.4 Million. Comic Book Movie Fatigue is a common topic, but let’s face it, this is bad comic book movie fatigue. Guardians 3, shows that audiences will come out to see a film that is both familiar and fresh. Unfortunately, it appears that the next MCU film (The Marvels) will not continue the upward trajectory of the franchise. I hope I am wrong, and it was a really bad looking trailer. Chris Pratt is in fourth place as he continues his monstrous run by adding $6.2 million to the massive $558.8 millions domestic take. With more family options available in the coming weeks, and the film already on Digital and slated to hit physical media in early June, we can expect this one to start its slide out of the top five after two months, and let the sequel talk begin!
Counter-programming was big this weekend with four new offerings aimed at mostly all different audiences. The two films were based on stand-up comedy routines of popular comedians. Bert Kresicher’s ‘The machine ‘ won with an estimated $4.9million, while Sebastian Maniscalco’s ‘About my Father ‘ came in slightly behind with $4.2million. I wonder if Robert DeNiro’s About my Fatherwill have better legs since it plays directly into the Father’s Day vibe which is still a few months away (June 18, for those who still need to purchase a card). The film
Kandahar didn’t get the best reviews (except for the 7/10 by Chris Bumbray), and it had a very poor $2.4 million opening weekend. This was about $8 million less that his previous big-screen effort, the January’s Plane
which actually was a really solid, action-packed film. I haven’t seen Kandahar yet but have never been disappointed by Butler in action star mode. The film You hurt my feelings, reuniting Julia Louis-Dreyfus with her Enough said director Nicole Hoofcener was a big hit at the Sundance Film Festival. The film was a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival this year. A24 acquired distribution rights and gave it a modest release on just over 900 screen, translating into a $1.3M debut. This film has modest numbers but solid reviews (95 % on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7/10 by our own Chris Bumbray). It could be the perfect counter to all those summer popcorn movies. Evil Dead Rise
is in ninth place with an additional $1.05 million. The film is a continuation of a long-running franchise that has been successful at the box office.
