The man in the hat has returned. Harrison Ford donned the fedora for the last time and the early numbers are in line with other aging legacy heroes. Harrison Ford has been open about his emotions in the lead up to the release of
Dial Of Destiny
. The Thursday night previews are now complete, and the numbers have been released. According to Deadline estimates, Disney and Lucasfilm will receive between $6 million and $7.5 million from early screening tickets (UPDATE: the total was $7.2 million). The $6 to $7 million range is similar to other Thursday previews for films featuring legacy action characters. For example, Daniel Craig’s final outing as Agent 007 in No Time to Die brought in $6.3 with a Thursday start time of 4 p.m., and Tom Cruise’s last Ethan Hunt adventure in Mission: Impossible – Fallout brought in $6 million Thursday before bringing in a total $61.2 million in its debut weekend.
Indiana Jayne and the Dial of Destiny began its run at 3 pm and is expected to gross between $60 million and $65 million in 4,500 theaters. This makes it “the second-highest stateside opening for the Steven Spielberg-George Lucas franchise after 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which posted a five-day opening of $151.9M, after a 3-day of $100.1M. Crystal Skull didn’t have previews, but opened fully on Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend with $25M in 4,260 theaters.”It is also expected to reach around $140 million globally. The projected numbers for this entry fall below Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. This sequel has been the subject of much debate since its premiere in Cannes a few months ago. Early reviews from the Cannes screening gave the film a score of 66%, the lowest in the series. RelishMix explains the social media reception of the swan song for Ford’s iconic character, “Chatter on Indy 5 runs mixed-leaning-positive with fans who think ‘this will be a masterpiece, filled with heart-pounding action’ and that Ford as Indy will be missed as one the best heroes ever — along with adoration for John Williams’ historic contribution and career. There’s also excitement for James Mangold as the director, as fans discuss their lives and the 39-year
series. They also wish there were more episodes. Hecklers are taking pot shots at everything from the story, throwback elements and cliche comments about sequels, but are nowhere as loud as lovers of the franchise.”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8wXEak1cLg
