Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the psychological thriller The Surfer, which will see him doing battle with surfers in Australia

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in the psychological thriller (excuse me, the “elevated” psychological thriller) The Surfer, a film that will be giving us the opportunity to watch Cage do battle with a gang of surfers – and maybe, if we’re lucky, we might even hear him doing a bit of an Australian accent.

Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) will be directing The Surfer from a screenplay by Thomas Martin. The synopsis is: When Cage returns to his Australian beachside hometown after years of building a career in the U.S.A., he’s humiliated by a gang of local surfers who claim strict control over the secluded beaches of his youth. “The Surfer”, who is wounded, decides to stay at the beach and declare war on those in charge of the bay. But as the conflict escalates, the stakes spin wildly out of control, taking “The Surfer” to the edge of his sanity.

Nathan Klingher is producing the film with Robert Connolly of Arenamedia and Leonora Darby, James Harris, and Mark Lane of Tea Shop Productions. Apur Parikh, Josh Harris, Ford Corbett, and Mark Fasano of Gramercy Park Media serve as executive producers with Michael Rothstein and Sam Hall for Mossbank.

Mossbank is handling international sales and is currently presenting The Surfer to potential distributors at the Cannes Film Festival. Domestic sales are being handled by WME Independent.

Sam Hall of Mossbank provided the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter: “We’re incredibly excited to be working with Lorcan, Thomas, Arenamedia and Tea Shop on such a visceral and unique thriller. Nicolas Cage is the perfect actor for this iconic role and will undoubtedly deliver a tour de force performance which is sure to be something very special and will captivate audiences worldwide.

The Surfer is scheduled to begin filming in Australia in September.

“Nicolas Cage fighting surfers in a thriller set in Australia” is definitely my idea of entertainment, so I’m already looking forward to watching this one. Does The Surfer interest you? Yesterday, we learned that Nicolas Cage – yes, apparently the man himself and not one of his characters – is being added to the horror video game Dead by Daylight.
