HBO’s The Idol had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday…and reactions are about what you’d expect.

HBO’s The Idol, which was co-created by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, with the famed fest screening the first two episodes. And while it did receive a five-minute standing ovation, that reception is far from unanimous.

The idol received much attention for its production and content issues, including delays. A mixture of criticism and praise was directed at Levinson, who was apparently trying to top the sexual content that helped make Euphoria such a success. According to multiple people who worked for The Idol the series “went from satire” to the thing it satirized” then turned into “more of a degrading romance story with a hollow Message.”

The idol will be joining works such as David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The return or Top Of The Lake: China Girl which was co-created with former Palme d’Or award winner Jane Campion.
