The Academy announced in 2020 that it would be incorporating inclusion standards. It was met with both cheers, and jeers. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has updated its Representation and inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE). This is according to Deadline. The Academy responded to the question
“Is it necessary for me to create a RAISE form for a movie that I do not want to be considered as Best Picture?”
by saying that their inclusion policies will not apply.
“You will have the choice to opt-in for Best Picture consideration.” If you decide to opt out, you will not be required to fill out a RAISE submission form. As per the Academy, “The standards encourage equitable representation on and off-screen to better reflect the diverse global population.”Typically, somewhere around 300 movies are eligible for the Best Picture Oscar in any given year. The Academy’s inclusion criteria are not applicable to the films that have a realistic chance of being nominated.
