Russell Crowe reveals that he wanted to walk about from Ridley Scott’s Gladiator over concerns about the “absolute rubbish” script.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was a huge success. Russell Crowe starred in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator as Maximus, the Roman general who was betrayed by his son and forced to become an gladiator. The historical epic became a huge hit, earning the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Actor. However, it’s no secret that the production of Gladiator was quite troubled and Russell Crowe even told Vanity Fair that he considered walking away from the movie.
Russell Crowe knew that Gladiator had great potential, but the script for the movie just wasn’t in the best shape when they started production. “I had confidence in my abilities as a lead actor. What I wasn’t confident about with Gladiator was the world that was surrounding me,” Crowe explained. “At the heart of what we did was a great idea, but the script was rubbish.” said Crowe. Absolute rubbish. It had these strange sequences. One was about chariots. Famous gladiators used certain types of chariots. Some famous gladiators also had endorsement deals for products like olive oil. All of this is true, but not to a modern audience.
