Quentin Tarantino says the failure of Death Proof shook his confidence and he started receiving proposals from Hollywood again as a result.
Quentin Tarantino has been fortunate in that all of his movies have been successful… with the exception of Death Proof. The film was part of a Grindhouse double-feature with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror but audiences weren’t sure what to think of it. Death Proof only grossed $31 million in its standalone release, and Tarantino said that the movie’s failure shook his confidence.While speaking to Spain’s Diari ARA (via Variety) during his Cinema Speculation book tour, Quentin Tarantino reflected on the performance of
Death Proof. Tarantino said, “I’ve been fortunate enough to write stories which have resonated with many people. This has allowed me to practice art without the limitations that most filmmakers face,“. “Now a funny thing happened. For a while, I received a lot of proposals for projects, but the studios eventually assumed that I write my own stories and it was not worth the effort. After ‘Death Proof’, which did not do well at the box-office and was a little of a shock for my confidence, I began getting proposals again. ” Rather than take one of these studio proposals, Quentin Tarantino decided to continue on his path. “
They probably thought, ‘Perhaps he’s been touched and his temper is down, now’,” Tarantino said. “And it’s not wrong to make movies for Hollywood.
