Arrow in the Head reviews Joe Cornet’s horror film Night of the Caregiver, starring Natalie Denise Sperl and Eileen Dietz

PLOT: A hospice nurse accepts a high-paying one-night job taking care of an elderly woman… but as the night goes on, it becomes clear there’s a supernatural evil lurking in the woman’s home.

REVIEW: After directing four Westerns in a row (A Prayer for the Damned, Incident at Guilt Ridge, Promise, and Gunfight at Rio Bravo), Joe Cornet has switched things up and made his horror debut with Night of the Caregiver – and he brought several Rio Bravo collaborators along with him: producer Alexander Nevsky, writer Craig Hamann, and cast members Natalie Denise Sperl and Anna Oris. Cornet doesn’t waste time now that he is working in horror. There’s no hiding the fact that there’s a demon creature in the mix. The camera moves through a creepy home, we see the monster’s hand moving around, and the titular caregiver is so scared that she sleeps with a flashlight nearby. Juliet (Sperl) is a hospice nurse, who answered an ad in a newspaper for a one-night, high-paying job to care for an elderly woman living in a remote mansion. Eileen Dietz plays Lillian Gresham. She has over 100 credits in screen acting, but you’ll most likely see her as the face of Pazuzu in

The exorcist

. Dietz has us caring about Lillian from the moment we meet her. She is friendly and adorable, and she serves up tea and cookies. Juliet becomes suspicious of “paranormal weirdness” while Lillian, who is terminally ill, rests in her room. She begins to hear and see things, including visions about her own murder by a demon’s claws. She’s soon napping with a torch nearby…It is an economical setup for a horror film, as it takes place mainly in one location and for the majority of the time, we are focused on only two characters: Juliet, and Lillian. But they’re not the only characters in the film. Cornet plays a detective trying to discover what happened to his mother, who disappeared 26 years ago. A parapsychologist, Eric Roberts, directs the detective to an isolated mansion to investigate an urban myth that is said to resurface every 13 years. The place of Lillian Gresham. The actors do well in their roles. Sperl makes for a good terror heroine, and she engages in some fun bantering with Oris. Cornet’s character is a nice addition to the story and it’s nice to see Roberts in something. Roberts is one of the most busy people in the entertainment industry. He has over 700 acting credits. Night of the Caregiver

is a fast-paced film, as can be seen by the fact that the movie wraps up within 77 minutes. This movie may bring you relief if you’re tired bloated running time and slow burns. This movie doesn’t drag on, it’s not padded with filler. It just sets up a mystery, puts Juliet in some creepy scenes and then delivers an exciting climax. Sometimes a short and simple, straightforward creepy house / lurking demon movie is exactly what you want to spend your evening with.
