Netflix has acquired the North American rights for Todd Haynes’ May Decembre, starring Natalie Portman & Julianne Moore.

The Cannes Film Festival is not known for its expensive acquisitions of films that are in competition. Most films end up at Cannes with a distributor in place. The deal, according to Deadline, was worth $11 million. Deadline reports that the deal is worth $11 million. The film stars Natalie Portman in the role of a famous actress who is researching her next role. She plays a woman with a scandalous relationship with a minor, and she spent years in prison, only to marry him when she was released. Julianne Moore plays the woman in a role that’s apparently inspired by the real life of the infamous Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who had an affair with a 13-year-old student, got pregnant, and eventually married the man when he was no longer underage.

The film co-stars Charles Melton as the husband, and early reviews suggest this is a twisted drama heavily inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s classic two-hander, Persona. The film is based on Letourneau’s story, but the actual case is fictional. Netflix must know they have a hit movie on their hands. Portman and Moore are both praised for their performances. Todd Haynes is no stranger to the Oscars, having directed

, Far from Heaven, and the recent, criminally underrated Dark Waters. Netflix’s deal appears to be only for North American rights. No news has been released on whether or not the film will be released in theaters. One could logically expect it to get some theatrical play towards the end the year in NY/LA, which seems standard for the streamer’s award fare.
