I had no idea what I was walking into when I caught

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Although I was aware of Judy Blume, I had not read the book. Then there was Kelly Fremon Craig, the writer/director. Abby Ryder Fortson plays Margaret in the film, which is incredibly sweet, intelligent, and surprisingly engaging, even for those who may not be its target audience. It’s a joy, and it helps that Rachel McAdams as Margaret’s mother and Benny Safdie is such a charming person. I was delighted to speak with Kelly Fremon Craig, for the first. I’ve been a huge fan of the director since I watched her fantastic feature The Edge of Seventeen

. Kelly talked about the process of tackling the source material. It was wonderful to see Judy Blume’s work being treated with such care, especially since it was a must-read for many. James was excited to talk about working with Kelly. His experience in the television and film industries speaks volumes about the talent he brings. Mr. Brooks appeared friendly and down to earth when he spoke about his latest project. Yes, both were fantastic. Rachel talked about getting involved late in a project. All involved made her feel very comfortable. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret opens it today!
