The impact of a combination of WGA and SAG strikes would affect far more than just those in Hollywood, with global repercussions likely.

The buzzword in Hollywood right now is strike, with the Writers Guild of America actively in theirs and SAG-AFTRA possibly nearing their own. What then? SAG-AFTRA, on the other hand, has over 160,000 members compared to 20,000 for the WGA. And with so many productions filming outside of the United States, that would mean more than just domestic offices closing down.Stopping so many productions amid another Hollywood strike would, of course, further impact the release calendar as well. We’ve already seen how much the WGA strike has played a role in this, as Disney has significantly shuffled their own releases, moving back major films like the upcoming

and Star Wars installments, with Avatar 5 now expected in 2031. The next Mission Impossible as well as Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator 202 or Juror 2 could all have an impact. Come on, the guy’s 93! Let him sneak past the lines on this one. While there’s no concern at the moment it’s still something to consider. Deadline quotes a festival rep as saying, “We are going forward assuming that there will be talent on our event and the carpet.” The strike has not been mentioned by studios or streamers yet. If it happens, it will be force majeure. You can’t do anything. The pandemic has taught us to live with uncertainties.”Evidently, a SAG strike would also affect the upcoming Emmy Awards, one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. This brings to mind the 1980 actors’ strike, which coincided with the 32nd Emmys. Of historical note, the only winner to attend that year was the late Powers Boothe.Unlike the WGA, SAG has a much leaner history of strikes, with the most recent being over 20 years ago. In 1960, they did launch one of Hollywood’s first major strikes, the same year the WGA began theirs. What do you expect to come out of the negotiations? Let us know below.
