Dwayne Johnson explains to Kevin Hart why Black Adam won’t continue and what stopped the franchise from moving forward.

Black Adam was a passion project for Dwayne Johnson. There were plans for a Black Adams sequel, as well as various spin-offs. There had been plans for a Black Adam sequel, not to mention various spin-offs

While speaking with Kevin Hart on Peacock’s Hart to Heart, Dwayne Johnson explained why the Black Adam franchise was over before it really had a chance.

“I think that Black Adam got caught in a vortex of new leadership,” Johnson said. “At that time, while we were creating Black Adam and developing it, we shot Black Adam. We got knocked a little down because of Covid, but we got back up. There were many changes in the leadership. You know that when you have a large company, especially one that is publicly traded, you will have new leadership that may not be in line with your philosophy. So I think Black Adam was one of those movies that got caught in that web of new leadership.“

Black Adams was not a box office juggernaut but it was Dwayne’s biggest opening in his career. It held the top spot for three consecutive weeks. The movie brought Henry Cavill back as Superman, and set the scene for his return to DC Universe. James Gunn, Peter Safran and others had different plans for the DC Universe than what Johnson had in his mind. Johnson said, “But at the end of it all, you know what’s going on??” “It is like new ownership buying an NFL team, and saying, ‘allright, not my coach, not mine.’ Doesn’t matter how many times you won a Super Bowl, doesn’t matter how many rings we got, I’m going with somebody else.’“

Dwayne jones spoke of meeting James Gunn in late last year, and even hinted at the possibility that he might still have a role to play in DC Universe. “My dear friends, I am pleased to provide you with a long-awaited Black Adam Update regarding the character’s Future in the New DC Universe.“, Johnson wrote in a statement. “James and I connected and Black Adam won’t be in their first chapter. However, DC and Seven Bucks have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilized in future DC multiverse chapters.“
