Cocaine Bear director Elizabeth Banks says she would take the opportunity if given the chance to make a Cocaine Bear 2
Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review HERE, get a copy at THIS LINK) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. I thought it was an absolute blast to watch. Banks responded to Rolling Stone when asked about the possibility that she might work on a sequel: “It was a blast working on (the first movie).” I loved the fact that it was subversive, crazy and silly. I loved how the cast surprised people. I don’t believe anyone expected Margo Martindale to shoot the kid, even though she’s 70. We had a great time, and I would love to surprise and delight the audience again. I’ve had the good fortune to work in a variety of genres that I enjoy. Cocaine bear
was also with me during the pandemic. We were all locked up, and I loved that sense of fun. It was exactly what I wanted. It spoke to me on many levels. It spoke to me on a lot of levels.“Cocaine Bear is based on true events that took place in Kentucky in 1985. Kevin Fraser, our own reporter, reported that the true story is as follows: “In 1985 convicted drug smuggler Andrew Thornton, was on a smuggling trip from Columbia. He had dumped several packages of cocaine before bailing out of the plane. He hit his head against the tail of the plane and fell to the ground in freefall. He was found dead on someone’s driveway. A 175-pound bear was discovered dead several months later after consuming approximately $15 million in cocaine that Thornton had dropped. The medical examiner who performed the bear’s necropsy stated that “its stomach was literally filled to the brim” with cocaine. “There’s no mammal in the world that could survive this.” Cerebral hemorrhaging, respiratory failure, hyperthermia, renal failure, heart failure, stroke. You name it, that bear had it.”Scripted by Jimmy Warden, the cinematic take on the concept finds
an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow… and blood. The film stars Keri Russell (
Antlers), Margo Martindale (
The Americans), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones), Kahyun Kim (American Gods), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), and newcomer Scott Seiss.Cocaine Bear was produced by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Aditya Sood of Lord Miller, Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman of Brownstone Productions, and Brian Duffield. Robin Fisichella and Nikki Baida serve as executive producers. While we wait to see if Elizabeth Banks will ever have the chance to make
Cocaine Bear 2, screenwriter Jimmy Warden has been busy plotting a
Magic 8 Ball movie for Mattel Films.Would you like to see a Cocaine Bear 2? Leave a comment to let us know what you think.
