As expected, Barbie retained its top spot and Oppenheimer reclaimed the second place. Unfortunately, The Last Voyage of the Demeter fails with just under $6 million.
Numbers for the weekend have started to roll in and Greta Gerwig’s
Barbie is still in the lead for a fourth consecutive week with an estimated $30million. This number puts the Margot Robertie/Ryan Gosling film at over half-a-billion dollars domestic. It is officially the highest-grossing movie directed by woman in both domestic box office (beating Frozen 2’s $477.4million, which Jennifer Lee co-directed) and global box-office (beating Captain-Marvel’s $1.13billion, which Anna Boden co- Even more impressive, Barbie 110010passed the half-billion dollar mark in only 22 days. This is faster than Top gun: Maverick 11001010 (30 days) and Super Mario Bros. Movie 11001010 (31 days). Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer reclaimed second place at the box office this weekend with an estimated $16-17 million and a total of just over $262.2 millions in the domestic box offices while its global take reaches over $600,000,000. These are insane numbers for a three-hour biopic. There’s a good news/bad news for the rest of the year. With the ongoing Writers Guild/Screen Actors Guild strike, some movies will delay their releases because they rely on the stars to market the films. The Gran Turismo release was delayed by two weeks to allow for word-of-mouth to be built from the advanced screenings. Meanwhile, the Emma Stone starring
Frankenstein story Poor Things
release was delayed to December to allow the star to properly promote her second film directed by Yorgos Lantimos after her Oscar nominated The Favorite. Warner Bros has been reported to be considering delaying the release of their fourth quarter tentpole Dune Part Two although no official decision has been made. If movies start to disappear from the calendar, movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer could dominate the charts into October and even November. The third place will be taken by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, with an estimated take between $14-$16million, which is a drop of around 50% from its opening week. The film is gaining a lot of attention, but it also has a $70 million budget, which is relatively low by today’s standards. This means that the film will make a good profit, and we can expect the sequel that was promised! The good news is that the film’s international numbers are strong. This means that even though the budget is in the $130-million range, Meg2: The Trench-may still make some money at the end of the run. The consensus among critics is that the film doesn’t do nearly enough to make a new entry in the Vampire genre. Jessica Dwyer’s 8/10 review found plenty to enjoy. Stephen King, Guillermo Del Toro and others have given the film positive feedback. King called it “a throat-ripping good time.” However, the current audience score for this film is 74%. This is not bad but also not great. Have any of you been to the theaters this weekend? Or is it still something on your to-do list? Please let us know what you think in the comments. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for a complete box office report.
