We are now in the second week of Barbenheimer, and it does not seem to be slowing!
Barbie will easily retain its top spot on the charts after a record-breaking weekend. This has bled into record-breaking weekday numbers. Many predict a drop of between low and mid 50%, putting the film between $70-$80 millions for its second frame. I think the movie is so popular and has such momentum that I don’t believe it will drop that much. Last week, I thought the movie would do well, but it actually did better than my estimate of $155 million. The actual numbers showed that
Barbie had beaten the $155 million weekend forecast by $7 million. This gave the movie a record-breaking $162 million for its opening weekend. This week, I’m going to say that Barbie has a drop of 40% and brings in around $90 Million. The only thing that could make that number be off would be the loss of the premium screens (such as Dolby) at many theaters to make way for the new release of the week, however I don’t think that new release will be in those premium screens for very long as I bet theaters are anxious to get Barbie back onto those screens ASAP.Oppenheimer should land in second place as that movie will retain its Imax screens, which have been largely sold out across the country all week long. What’s even more impressive, Barbie’s audience score has dipped a bit during the week (from a 90% last week to a current 86%…of course I wouldn’t be surprised if some of that is review bombing) while
Oppenheimer’s audience score has only fallen 1% since last week as it currently sits at a 92%. I believe Oppenheimer will also see a small drop in its opening weekend of over $82 million to land with around 50 million. The big new release for the week, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, will take third place. The film is currently tracking in the $35 million range. However, the horrendous reviews and the fact it comes after two of the biggest films of the year will cause it to fall. I would be surprised if the film lands more than $25 million. I say “justifiably horrible reviews” because the film currently has a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I watched the movie last night and I can tell you that this score seems a little too high. It was a very ordinary movie with few moments that were even mildly funny. It’s a good thing they cast Owen Wilson & Danny DeVito, otherwise the movie wouldn’t have been funny. I guess that with Barbie and Sound Of Freedom in the theaters at the exact same time, it’s true that there is something for everyone!
I expect Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one to also level off this weekend, after its softer opening than expected and its severe second-week drop. These numbers do not reflect the quality of this movie, which is excellent. Both critics and audience members have given it high ratings (96% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 94% score from the audience). It’s good that the market is so crowded, but I don’t think this movie will be able to compete. The other new release this week is the A24 horror
Talk to Me which is a film that has been marketed in a creepy way and has received some good reviews (currently rated at 95% by Rotten Tomatoes), but its audience score is a little low (currently rated at 73%).
