Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith are joining Jared Leto and Evan Peters in the cast of the third Tron film, Tron: Ares

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is really picking up steam. Jared Leto has been in talks for a Tron film called Tron Ares for six years, but the project started to take shape earlier this year. Joachim Ronning, the director of Maleficent : Mistress of Eviland Pirates of the Caribbean : Dead Men Tell No Tales, signed on to direct the movie. We heard a few months ago that Cillian Murphy would reprise his role as the villain from Tron Legacy in this film. Leto was joined in the cast by Evan Peters, who played Dahmer in Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer story. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Greta Lee (Past Lives) will be playing “a leading role” in the film, while Variety reports that Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) has also been cast.

Tron: Ares is expected to start filming in August… but that will only be possible if the Screen Actors Guild strike doesn’t happen.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, Tron: Ares is said to tell the story of the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact. Leto plays Ares, the “manifestation of the program.” Tron: Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski in 2010, brought fans back to the

Tron world. Since then, things have been a little messy. Kosinski wanted to make a third Tron film, to be called Tron: Ascension, but Disney cancelled the project when their movie Tomorrowland underperformed. The script for Tron Ascension included a character called Ares… but somehow, the idea for this character has evolved into the Tron Ares. Leto is producing Tron Ares along with Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Springer and Russell Allen. Russell Allen serves as executive producer. What do you think of the cast that’s being assembled for Tron: Ares? Are you happy to hear Greta Leigh and Jo Turner-Smith are in the movie?
