We look back at the 2016 box office flop turned cult hit Poster: Never Stop Never Stopping, starring the Lonely Island.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping should have been a hit movie. It was released when Andy Samberg, thanks to his innovative viral shorts with The Lonely Island, was on top of the world at Saturday night Live. Their “Lazy Monday” and “D*ck In A Box” shorts became early YouTube hits. Samberg played Conor4Real in this movie, a pop singer who left his boy band Style Boyz and went solo. Timberlake, who is always up for a good joke, had an extended cameo in the film as Conor4Real’s chef. Always one to appreciate a good joke, Timberlake had an extended cameo in the film as Conor4Real’s chef.

Timberlake wasn’t the only one to contribute a cameo, with the cast list a who’s who of SNL vets including Tim Meadows, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Sarah Silverman, plus music royalty like Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, Arcade Fire, Katy Perry, 50 Cent and tons more. The soundtrack songs, such as “I’m So Humble”, featuring Adam Levine of Maroon 5, went viral before the film was released. Everyone expected the film to be a success. Universal released the movie in June 2016 and it was a disappointment. The film was a hit with online critics, including us at JoBlo, but it was ignored by the public, with only $9.6m in domestic sales. Box Office Mojo reports that it only made $40k internationally. This means it went straight to VOD in many places. Ouch.
