Evil Dead Rise is a great new instalment in the franchise that allows everything else that came before to exist, while giving it a new spin.
PLOT: Beth and Ellie, two sisters who have grown apart, are brought back together on a fateful night when Beth stops by to visit her older sister and her kids; Danny, Bridget, and Kassie the youngest. Things take a turn when budding DJ Danny decides to play some very, very old records they’ve discovered and the mother of all evil is unleashed.
REVIEW: The Evil Dead franchise has been a part of the horror genre for 42 years, even longer if you count the film Within The Woods. The franchise has been centered around Bruce Campbell’s reluctantly hero Ash Williams for 42 years. Even the remake from ten years back included Ash at the end. But times are changing, and in Evil Dead Rise Ash Williams isn’t a part in the story. Bruce Campbell is the executive producer, and he does appear in a way (no spoilers). And you know what else? Ash not being a part of the bloody festivities is totally okay as
Evil Dead Rise stands on its own with new characters facing a very, very old menace and it does it awesomely.Written and directed by Lee Cronin,
Evil Dead Rise expands the universe of the Evil Dead in a smart way that allows literally all of the iterations to exist. It’s not a reboot, remake, or reimagining. Evil Dead Rise can be considered a sequel, or a new chapter in the blood-stained book of the Deadites. There are a lot more easter eggs and nods in the film…but that’s not to say they’re not there. This adds to the enjoyment for fans who’ve been enjoying these films as long as we do. Cronin’s efforts were not only aided by Bruce Campbell, but also by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert, who were both producers on the project. You can tell that Cronin, his crew and the original gang all loved the series.
Evil Dead rise
takes the action out of the woods and into an apartment in the middle city. You may think that this would reduce the fear factor for the demons, but you haven’t seen The shining or even Demons 2011001010. Evil Dead rise makes use of a set and space that can feel very confined. The film’s look is surreal at times, with camera angles and lighting used to create a dark, sickly mood. It doesn’t waste time and once it gets going, it doesn’t stop. The film is a fast-paced 97 minutes, and it GOES. No one is safe once mom Ellie transforms into one of most disturbing and frightening female monsters that I’ve seen for a long time. Alyssa sutherland is amazing in this film. She worked with Cronin’s team to create Ellie’s appearance and movements. It’s very effective and I think a lot of people will love it. It’s as messed up as you think it is and honestly even worse than you can imagine as the night from hell rolls along to an ending that would make every therapist in the world’s head explode.Honestly everyone does a great job with Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher all keeping the tension and terror ratcheted up while trying to stay alive. Nell Fisher is especially great as Kassie, the youngest character. She makes you want hug her and protect her from all the bad stuff as she witnesses all the bad stuff you could possibly see. It features female leads and a number horrific scenarios that incorporate aspects of motherhood, sisterhood, and other things that only a Evil dead
movie could. Oh, and let’s not forget the MVP, the cheese grator. It’s cringe-worthy and Lee Cronin deserves to be jailed for that scene. This is a movie that you should watch in a group of horror fans who can laugh at the jokes and will applaud and scream along with you during every gory scene. Oh and it’s the very first horror movie in 30 years that has given me a nightmare waking up screaming for my mother. Once you see the film, you’ll wonder what the hell I did because you should have been running away from mommy…she is with the maggots.
