Once upon a time there was a sweet little child named Brian Hugh Warner. Brian attended his Christian School, while dreaming of becoming a music journalist. Brian would later use the wholesome images that he learned from his religious upbringing in order to spread joy to a legion of his fans. He would grow up to become a reverend. Brian Hugh Warner sounds like a good citizen! Brian Hugh Warner was not the man the world would know him as. The Reverend that he would become one day was not from the Church of Christ, but rather from the Church of Satan. How did a Christian Schoolboy grow up to become the Antichrist Superstar? Find out what happened to Marilyn Manson as we ask WTF Happened?
But, as always, we must start at the beginning. The beginning began in Canton on January 5, 1969. Warner was raised in a strict Christian home and grew to appreciate things that he had been told he couldn’t enjoy. This included Metal Music. He moved to Ft. Lauderdale in Florida to attend Community College and work towards a Journalism degree. He was hired to write for the Florida music magazine 25th Parallax , where he interviewed several prominent artists. Warner and the late Scott Putesky began playing music together. Warner would write the lyrics, while Putesky would write the music. Warner then adopted the stage name Marilyn Manson combining Marilyn Monroe’s first name and Charles Manson’s last name. The duo formed the band Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids and quickly gained a following in Southern Florida for their bizarre stage antics such as having naked women nailed on crucifixes or children in cages. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails signed the band to his vanity label Nothing Records, a subsidiary of Interscope records, and produced their debut album Portrait Of An American Family (1994). After the release of Portraits, Manson, his band, and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails worked on an EP which was originally intended to be remixes of Dopehat
. However, once the pieces fell in place, the album included several cover songs including a cover of 1983 Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This). This cover would lead to an MTV Video Music Award-nominated music video. Manson claims that the song idea came to him while he was on LSD and listening to the song at a party. He hallucinated an even slower, meaner version. The album’s themes of child abuse, drug abuse, domestic abuse, and psychological abuse were met with a lot of pushback from conservative lawmakers and parents groups who said that the lyrics on the EP celebrated the “most antisocial and immoral behavior imaginable”. They also claimed that record labels selling this type of music have the blood of children in their hands. The EP would chart at number 31 on the Billboard 100, and was certified Platinum by RIAA.It is around this time when we started to see Marilyn Manson t shirts worn by all the scary gothic kids in the school hallways. You know, some kids would wear Korn shirts and others would wear Limp Bizkit, but the worst of the bad metal heads would display Manson on their clothing. This would let you know whether you should hang out with these kids or not. I recently saw a funny meme that talked about how we didn’t use social media or memes back then to spread the untruths of Manson rumored his ribs so he could bleep himself bleep. We just used word of mouth. All of this controversy helped Marilyn Manson, as his 1996 album Antichrist Superstar-would receive even more outcry by Christian Fundamentalists. Manson and his band members reportedly went on drug binges and deprived themselves of sleep to create an album with a violent and hostile feel. The band embarked on a tour to promote the album, which was picketed in every city by religious groups. The band would embark on a tour to promote the album that was picketed at every city by religious groups.Manson would get his first taste of the big screen when he appeared in David Lynch’s Lost Highway (1997) as Porno Star #1 and would follow that up by appearing opposite his then girlfriend Rose McGowan in 1999’s Jawbreaker
playing “The Stranger.” Soon after Manson would release his next album
Mechanical Animals (1998) that featured such hit tracks as the Grammy Nominated The Dope Show, Rock is Dead which was featured on the soundtrack toThe Matrix,
and the controversial I Don’t Like The Drugs (but the drugs like me). It would appear that the controversy paid off as this album would debut number one on the Billboard 200 charts. The album was created as a bridge album between their first album Antichrist Superstar and their next album Holy Wood. It would represent a move away from industrial music and more towards a mix 1970’s style electronic music and glamrock. The album cover, which features Manson dressed as an androgynous naked Omega character, was named by many publications one of the 50 best album covers ever. It was a time when Manson seemed to be on top of the rock world. It would seem that Manson was on top of the world, or at least of the rock world. The media, which at the time, was desperate to find someone to blame, used the opportunity to blame Manson, claiming that his lyrics and performances had influenced the people who committed this heinous crime. The headlines were “Killers Worshipped Rock Freak Manson”, “Devil Worshipping Maniac told Kids to Kill”, even after it was revealed that the two attackers were not Marilyn Manson fans. He came across as a thoughtful and well-spoken individual. And he surprisingly came off as well spoken thoughtful individual. It would seem the controversy did take its toll on his album sales as his next album 2000’s Holy Wood would take on the controversy of the Columbine tragedy head on with the track titled The Nobodies, however the album would peak at number 13 on the Billboard 200, despite releasing their biggest international hit ever with the cover of Gloria Jones’ hit Tainted Love which would be featured on the Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack.By 2002, Manson would start looking to change things up. He began by collaborating on the score of the big screen film, Resident Evil, with Marco Beltrami. He would also appear on screen in a surprising good performance in the true-life crime story Party Monster (2003 ) before releasing his second album
The Golden Age of Grotesque, The album produced several hit songs including This is the New Shit which was featured on
The Matrix Reloaded-soundtrack. The album would produce several hit songs including This is the New Shit which was featured on The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack. After releasing a best of album titled Lest We Forget which also featured a new cover of Depeche Mode’s
Personal Jesus, Manson would take a bit of a hiatus from music as he pursued other interests. He would appear on hit TV shows such as Californication and Eastbound and Down while providing the voice of Shadow in ABC’s fantasy series Once Upon a Time. He would also poke fun at himself when he voiced his persona on the MTV show Celebrity Deathmatch-which actually launched with an Episode featuring Charles Manson and Marilyn Manson0 Manson was disillusioned by the music industry in 2005. He said that he did not want to create art that record labels would turn into products, but rather wanted to create art. Johnny Depp claimed that he was inspired by Manson to create the character of Willy Wonka, in Tim Burton’s rebooted Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. While at the time Manson was trying to put together his own theatrical film titled Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll where Manson would play the
Alice in Wonderland writer, however the film has been stuck in developmental hell since 2004.In 2007 the 36 year old Manson went public with his relationship to actress Evan Rachel Wood would was 18 at the time. This couple, of course, confused everything. Evan Rachel Wood appealer led a fairly sheltered but then she entered into the world of hollywerid and felt the need to rebel and she did this by cranking it to 11…. One should not go from a sweet innocent Allegedly…. We will talk more about this later. We will discuss this more later.Manson continued to appear in small roles in films like Rise : Blood Hunter (2007) while showing his comedic skills on shows like 01 He would eventually land bigger roles, such as when he appeared in the short-lived show Salem. He has also worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Nine Inch Nails, Eminem, and John Malkovich , and received his fifth Grammy nomination as a featured artist He has also collaborated with some of the biggest names in music such as Nine Inch Nails, Eminem, Elton John and would receive his fifth Grammy Nomination as a featured artist on the 2022 Kanye West release: Donda.Manson is a controversial figure with many of those controversies having to do with his on stage persona including threatening journalists, writing controversial songs like “I want to kill you like they do in the movies” a song he wrote about ex girlfriend and future fiance Evan Rachel Wood, but he has also been the focus of much more serious accusations such as Wood testifying before Congress about her experience with domestic and sexual abuse. In 2021, Wood revealed in an Instagram post her abuser’s name was Brian Warner, better known as Marilyn Manson. The Los Angeles Attorney’s Office did not pursue the case because the allegations were uncorroborated. Manson categorically denies the allegations, saying that the person made them to generate interest in the Manson memorabilia, But the allegations were enough for Manson’s record label, Agency and Manager to drop him, and the show American Gods to edit him out of an upcoming episode he appeared in, even though Manson maintained that Wood’s allegations were distorted and that all of his relationships have been consensual between like minded partners. From 2021 through 2022 several women came forward alleging weird and abusive details of relationships they had with Manson over the years. In November 2021, the LA County Sheriff’s Department raided Manson’s home without making an arrest. Most of the lawsuits were dismissed, but one was settled outside of court. In February 2023, one of Manson’s accusers, Ashley Morgan Smithline who appeared on the People Magazine cover story with the headline “I Survived A Monster” in May 2021, came out to say that her accusations Since then, no further allegations have been made against Manson. It appears that all of his legal proceedings were either dismissed or settled. Manson, however, has been quiet on all fronts. In March 2022, he wrote on Twitter: There will be a time that I can share more information about the events of the last year. It was only a few days back that Evan Rachel Wood announced she would be giving up custody of their son due to alleged threats by Manson. It seems that this is an ongoing drama, and we can only pray for a happy ending. Manson’s music and persona have made him a target for those who feel that they are entitled to tell others what they should do with their lives. But Manson has always taken this in stride and has continued to do whatever When he’s publicly attacked, he leans even harder into it on his next record. It appears that his outlandish personality isn’t limited to the stage. Despite denying any abuse accusations, he admits to engaging with like-minded individuals who may be out of normal. We cannot say what’s true and what’s not. He is a top-notch entertainer who puts on memorable performances for his legions. As we wait for the next chapter of this dark, twisted story, it’s ok to care about what happened to Marilyn Manson, because there is a lesson there somewhere… like, don’t date Marilyn Manson… because allegedly!
