It’s no secret that The Flash tanked after a $55m opening weekend. This weekend has shown that two titans who were once very powerful have fallen. On Thursday, we asked whether
The flash
could be able to overcome the controversy surrounding it. The answer to this question is a resounding “no” as
The flash completely bombed its three-day opening weekend with only $55.1 million. This is way below what I thought anyone would predict and is shocking to be honest. This movie was a hit, thanks to its star and the fact it is part of an almost dead cinematic universe. What went wrong? You can’t discount the possibility that people don’t like to watch a movie that is filled with characters who are so troubled off-screen that they don’t wish to spend money to support them. It’s also possible that, after the DCEU reboot was announced, the films that were already filmed in that universe are no longer relevant and we don’t need to spend money on them. We can wait a few more months and watch them on a lazy weekend. Or maybe the writer’s strikes has affected the promotion of this film. I never thought publicity tours were that important. I always thought that the general public learned about new movies through theatrical trailers, television spots, and online presence. But maybe late night talk shows play a major role in how they learn. Doubtful. WB had also had many people call this movie “the best comic book movie ever produced” with stars such as Tom Cruise tailing about how much they enjoyed it. The Flash is a decent film. The last few DC and Marvel films (except for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 which stuck the landing and
The Batman
and Joker which are stand alone films in their own universes.) Can international audiences save this movie from a complete failure? Doubtful. The other movie that failed to impress this weekend was Pixar’s Elemental, which opened with only $29.5 million. Pixar’s films used to open with close to or over $100 million. They had a last original IP title, Onward, from2020, which opened with $39.1 millions, even though it was a time where Covid was still launching and people were hesitant to go to the theaters. No such excuse for Elemental. Reviews have been mixed, leaning positive, currently at a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91% audience score (our own Chris Bumbray gave it a 7/10 in his review.) The R-rated comedy No hard feelings will be released next week, giving this one some breathing room, but Spiderman is really taking all of the animated dollars. I’m not certain how much competition Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken will be. The Tim Story-directed horror comedy in the style of Get out
should make a solid profit at the end of it all. That’s all that matters. This isn’t a Blumhouse production, but it is following that Blumhouse model of low budgets turning out solid profits. As far as limited releases go, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City looks to be pulling in massive numbers at just six theaters in New York and Los Angeles with what is looking like a $120,000 per screen average, which would make it the best per screen average in the post pandemic age (since 2019’s Parasite). Chris Bumbray, our own reviewer, gave it a 6/10 (while admitting that it could improve with further viewings). General audiences will have the chance to see the film next week when it goes wide.Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse continues its stellar run with an additional $27.8 million. It is a fact that a good movie will do well. Across the Spider-verse is one of those movies. (Don’t take my word for this, check out the 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating, the 95% audience rating, the A cinemascore, or Chris Bumbray’s 9/10 review.) It may be early, but mark my words, this will be the Academy Award Winner for Best Animated Film, becoming The Godfather and The Godfather Part II
of the animated world! The remainder of the top five belong to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts taking a pretty substantial tumble in its second week with a 67% decline and just a $20 million second weekend. The Michael Bay Transformers movies made money, despite the negative comments. The holdover titles,
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 ($5 million), The Boogeyman- ($3.8 million) and 1 001010FastX ($2.02 million). The tenth spot belongs to the Indian action movie
Adipurush. Did you catch one of the new releases this weekend? Let us know if you did in the comments. Don’t forget to vote on our weekly poll, where we ask who is the best Batman.
