When thinking of patriotic American movies, one cannot avoid Top Gun and its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The first film has become a classic with a cast who have become icons. Some, like Tom Cruise are still very active within the film industry. Others have taken other paths. Most of them has stayed active in films and television, let’s take a look at some of the favorites from the Top Gun cast:
Val Kilmer
Playing Tom Iceman Kazansky, Kilmer played the perfect counterpart to Tom Cruise here and came with his own strong resume. Kilmer has starred in a number of films since then, including The Doors’ Jim Morrison, Batman/Bruce Wayne, Batman Forever, Willow, Tombstone and Heat. He was forced to slow down his career after a bout of throat cancer in 2014. He has, however, not fully stopped and has been seen in movies since then, including reprising his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick.
When quoted recently in Entertainment Weekly’s 2022 Entertainers of the Year, Val Kilmer said the following about Cruise: “Coming back to work with Tom more than 30 years later, it was like no time had passed at all. Val Kilmer, quoted in Entertainment Weekly’s 2022 Entertainers of the Year, said that Cruise was a consummate professional. “Coming back to work with Tom more than 30 years later, it was like no time had passed at all.” You instantly feel better when you’re with him. It was really fun — really special.” It was really fun — really special.”
Kelly McGillis
Playing Maverick’s love interest, McGillis caught the eye of many a moviegoer back in the 1986 and was the dream girl for more than one air force-minded boy. McGillis’ career was fairly active after Top gun. She had multiple roles each year until 2001, when she began to slow down. Then, in the mid-2010s things slowed further, and it seems that her career will end in 2020. She has been away from the spotlight for some time and seems to be doing what she wants, away from cameras.
Anthony Edwards
As Maverick Bradshaw’s partner Nick “Goose”, Edwards gave the perfect performance of a person stuck between his senses of adventure, duty to his country, and love for his family. Edwards went on to join the cast of ER for 14 years, has has a mix of film and television roles including appearances on The Weber Show, Blue Bloods, Billions, Designated Survivor, and Tales of the Walking Dead most recently. Edwards has had a busy career on both the small screen and the big screen.
Meg Ryan
In her role as Carole Bradshaw, Meg Ryan had a more emotional part compared with the mostly male cast here. She was not yet the household name that she would become when she joined the Top Gun crew. She nailed the role and followed this role with parts in movies such as Innerspace, When Harry Met Sally, The Doors, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, In the Cut, and quite a few more. John Stockwell
Top gun
fans will recognize John Stockwell as Lieutenant Bill Cougar Cortell. He was one of many men at Naval Air Station Miramar and the USS Enterprise Carrier Air Group. Fans of Top Gun will remember his character, while casual viewers might need to refresh their memory. Clarence Gilyard played Ltjg Marcus Sundown Williams. Stockwell hasn’t been active as an actress since his last role in Escape At Dannemora, in 2018. Stockwell’s career has been sporadic over the last few years. His last role was in 2012, followed by 2008, and then 2006. However, right after Top Gun, the man was rather busy with parts in the Friday the 13th series, Born to Ride, Nixon, and more. Ironside has been a mainstay in cinema for many years. A character actor who is not afraid to take on varied roles, Ironside played Jester for the Top Gun cast. With over 280 credits, Ironside is an unstoppable actor. Since Top Gun, he was seen in just about everything including Total Recall, McBain, Free Willy,
Major Payne
, Black Light, Starship Troopers, Turbo Kid, BlackBerry, and just about hundreds more. He has been in the industry for six decades, and it seems he’s planning to stay around for a very long time. Tom SkerrittThe man from the original Alien film shows up in Top Gun as Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the man who aims at teaching Maverick a thing or two, stealing a few scenes along the way. Since this, Skerritt has been seen in movies like SpaceCamp, Poltergeist III,
Steel Magnolias
, Contact, and Tears of the Sun and in series such as Cheers, Picket Fences, The Grid, and Brothers and Sisters. In the last five years, he has only taken on four roles. Top gun has been a classic summer film for decades. It is perfect for a long weekend at the drive-in or after a BBQ. The cast is still loved and many of them have roles on television and in movies, giving their fans exactly what they want. The fact that so many people still follow the careers and work of this cast is a testament to their power and impact from Top Gun and ever since. Was it a fitting addition to this movie?
