Ethan Coen’s narrative debut, Drive-Away Dolls, has been pushed back five months and will now debut in February.
The brakes have been pumped on Ethan Coen’s upcoming solo directing effort, Drive-Away Dolls, which has become one of the latest victims of both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Drive-Away Dolls was originally set for a September 22nd release, but has been pushed back to February 23rd, 2024. This will also remove it from the box office competition of Craig Gillespie’s Dumb money about a group Reddit users that caused a “short-squeeze” on GameStop’s stock. Dumb money, which is a real-life financial drama that makes you feel smart despite only understanding 30% of it, could also be an Oscar contender. Hey, The Big Short has received five Academy Award nominations and a Toronto Film Festival premiere behind it. It could be a contender.
But that’s enough about Craig Gillespie. Ethan Coen made his solo directorial debut with Drive Away Dolls (excluding the documentary Jerry Le Lewis: Trouble in Mind). This was a break from Joel Coen. The duo haven’t directed a film together since 2018’s 11001010The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs, but they do plan to reunite. Of note, Joel Coen made his solo outing with 2021’s The Tragedy of MacBeth, which was well-received by critics.Drive-Away Dolls
is about “an uninhibited free spirit (Margaret Qualley) bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. The two embark on a road trip in search of a new start. However, things quickly turn sour when they encounter a group of inept thieves along the way. It will be interesting to see how Ethan Coen does on his own. The trailer may not have been the most exciting, but it is still worth watching. He wrote the script with his wife, Tricia Cooke, a frequent collaborator of the Coen Bros. Do you think the release date change could affect its box-office?
