The new episode of the Revisited video series looks back at 1992’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, featuring Paul Reubens

With the recent passing of Paul Reubens, it got me thinking about the first role I ever saw him in, funny enough, without even knowing it was him until years later. It’s as a longtime rocker with a taste for blood. It’s a fun role, acting with the legend that is Rutger Haauer. Today, I’d like you to revisit a light-hearted and charming vampire film from the early 1990s. Today we talk about Buffy the Vampire Slayer (watch it HERE). Today we are talking about
Buffy The Vampire Slayer(watch it HERE).First of all, I know the show is most accurate andBuffy is considered television format. So I don’t intend this to be a compare. This revisit is more a love-letter to a gateway horror film. Buffy, directed by Fran Rubelkuzui, was released in 1992 and features a unique blend of horror, comedy and teen drama. If someone has never heard of it, I’d pitch Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Clueless meets campy Dracula, but Buffy precedes it. The 90s may not have realized how much Clueless
owes to this. This is a great retro film. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but it will make you feel old. I’m not a lister, but this cast is amazing. I mean, we’ve got Donald Sutherland and Rutger Haauer, The Raven, Stephen Root, David Arquette Thomas Jane, Hilary Swank Paul Reubens Luke Perry, Kristy Swanson. Before we move on, I’d like to focus on Reubens. He played against type and his look (which at the time was very cool) was based on his worst day. I won’t go into the details, but his arrest led to a famous mugshot. When he starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he reclaimed the same look. Tim Burton’s first character and one that defined the 1980s. Here he plays Amilyn the quirky, bumbling sidekick of the film’s main villain and vampire extraordinaire Lothos. Ruebens disappears in the role of Amilyn, a bad guy (he murders teens). What makes this character so memorable? Why does Ruebens steal a movie that has such big names? Because of his physical comedy and comedic timing. There’s a finely tuned energy that makes him seem almost relaxed compared to Pee Wee. He also brings a level that always makes me laugh. Even though he was a bit evil, he was endearing. Let’s not forget, while Rutger’s character was sinister and intensely intense, Reubens goofiness perfectly balanced it. This is a secondary plot, but the way they played off eachother adds a lot to the overall tone of the film. Do I wish that it was more bloody? Yes. The studio executives and Fran are going for a fun vibe, not the dark and serious angle Joss wanted. Hey, a girl’s gotta relax. Donald Sutherland plays Merrick, and she finds out her destiny. Buffy is a vampire killer. Swanson’s portrayal as Buffy is great. She has a cute, San Fernando Valley thing, but with enough edge to make me buy it when I need it. Sarah Michelle Gellar is more of a casual late 90s teen, which worked better for the tone and has held up better over time. Swanson, on the other hand, adds a playful, endearing quality while heavily leaning towards the bubbly blonde stereotype. Ya know, someone who SHOULD be unable to defeat a vampire. David Arquette is clearly enjoying himself as The Main Lackey Benny. Luke Perry was at the height of his career, breaking girls’ heart. He does a good job of portraying the outcast Pike, who is soft-spoken. I admit that as a child, I didn’t understand his appeal, but I can now see how charming the son of a b*tch was. And he adds a needed urgency to the whole situation.
Swank’s Kimberley is annoying, but obviously, that was the script and direction, and Swank nails it. She plays the ditzy character to perfection. The character is so dingbat, that even Stephen Roots as Mr. Murry takes her down a level. Can we admit that Root is a great character actor? Hats off for everything he has done. Shows up to work every single time.
Sometimes, I miss these kinds of movies. This type of nostalgia is closely tied to the time it was made, a snapshot from youth. But I had my own time, just as you did, and your children will have theirs. But when I think of who we lost with this movie, it makes me appreciate the art that we got. Some of it is deep, others are slapstick, but they’re all entertaining. Life can be difficult. Relax and enjoy yourself. The beauty of movies, guys.
