With an impressive Thursday and Friday opening, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is looking to open over 3 times higher than the original.
Numbers have begun pouring in for this first weekend of June and it appears we have another Super Mario Bros. Movie situation brewing. In April, the projections for Super Mario Bros. were $87 million, but by Sunday, that number had risen to a record-breaking $146.3 million. I don’t think we are going to see an explosion like that with Spider-Man but original tracking had Across The Spider-Verse at around $80 million, in our predictions from Thursday we saw the writing on the wall and put our guesstimate at around the $110 million mark. The film’s previews on Thursday brought in an impressive $17.35million, which is the second highest preview number ever for an animated title. It’s only behind The Incredible’s 2’s take of $18.5million. This highly anticipated Pixar film would eventually open at $182.6 millions. All eyes are now on Saturday’s figures to see if this film is front-loaded, or not. Super hero films tend to have a lot of front-loading from fans. It appears that Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse
may appeal to a wider audience, as online chatter is heavy and positive. The film has a score of 97%, which means that word-of-mouth will be strong. I noticed that many people didn’t realize the film was “Part 1”, and the ending was, well, not a conclusion! Box office experts predict that the film’s opening weekend will top out at $110 million. However, with the massive success, I believe we may see it reach $120 million. Saturday numbers will tell us more. The Boogeyman , adapted from a Stephen King short story, brought in $1.1 in Thursday previews. This is not bad considering other recent horror films such as
Evil Dead Rise , Smile and even M3GAN, which all pulled in slightly more. M3GAN was the best with a $2.7m Thursday preview. The films that were reviewed by Chris Bumbray (6/10) and aimed at the teenage market, are expected to make a lot more money than Boogeyman. If this PG13 horror film, that our own Chris Bumbray said was aimed at the teenage market in his 6/10 review, can maintain even a fraction of what those films ultimately made, it will be a big win for theatrical over streaming as the film was originally intended to debut on the Hulu streaming service.Disney will have bragging rights for the weekend as they will be the owners of spots two through four (as they own 20th Century Studios which released The Boogeyman) on the charts as The Little Mermaid
is expected to ease in the mid 50% range with a low to mid $40 million take. This is a pretty good hold, considering the competition. The film will also surpass the live-action Aladdin by about $4 million at the end of the weekend. While Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is predicted to have a stronghold with another $10-$12million. Stateside Fast 10 just does not seem to have the momentum of previous entries, as it is looking at easing over 60% with its weekends take under $10 million. Thank Dom for the international numbers, which have already put the film over half-a-billion. We’ll find out if the franchise ends after the next movie. However, if Vin Diesel continues to feud with every actor who appears in these films, Fast X may be Diesel driving a car by himself. Have you seen the movie yet? Or is it still on your to-do list? Let us know in the comments what you watched (and how much you enjoyed it) and don’t miss tomorrow’s full box office report.
