The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the top film for the fourth week running. New releases are struggling to reach double digits. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
, which is currently estimated at $30 million, is in first place for a fourth week. Of course, anyone who has followed this behemoth movie knows that estimates that are made on early Saturdays are usually blown out of the water by the end of that day as families flock to the theaters on the weekends. The film is currently at $450 million, which places it in the fourth spot on the domestic animated charts. However, by the end the weekend the film could surpass the $486.2 millions taken in by 2016’s Finding Dory.
It has a long way to go before it can overtake the all-time animated leader in the domestic box office, which is Incredibles 2, with its $608.5 million take, but anything’s possible. It’s Me Margaret looks like it will have the best weekend, with a predicted $6 million opening. It’s not the $15 million opening I expected based on last year’s comparable opening of Where The Crawdads sing which also was based on a loved novel. I am not sure Margaret will have the same longevity, even with solid reviews including an 8/10 from our own JimmyO and an impressive 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m not sure Margaret will have the same longevity with week after week of big films coming up, even though it has solid reviews, including an 8/10 rating from our own JimmyO, and a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s Me, Margaret
. Right now, Sisu is still only expected to do around $5 million for the weekend, but that is only because it has a limited release of 900 screens, but with great reviews including a rare 10/10 from our own Alex Maidy, combined with a 93% critical score and 90% audience score, it is possible this lean hour and thirty one minute R rated tale can have some legs at the box office. It looks like there is a fight between three heavyweights this weekend as Sisu, Big George Foreman
or Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World, as that appears to be its official title and the 40th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi are in a dead heat with all expected to do around $5 million this weekend. It seems that audiences are more interested in a fictional story than the real one. A few months ago, Creed 3 saw a $58.3 Million opening. Films with a faith-based angle but that try to reach a wider audience like this one or 2021’s 11001010American Underdog 11001010tend under-perform compared to films like
Jesus Revival that target directly at that base. The story of George Foreman should be seen because he is an inspirational and legendary figure. The rest of the charts are your holdovers, such as Evil Dead Rise that looks to drop the horror film standard 60% with an expected $10 million second weekend. John Wick Chapter 4 officially became the highest grossing John Wick film in the United States with $171.5 millions taken in since its initial release. Let us know what you think in the comments. Don’t forget to come back tomorrow for a full breakdown of this week’s box office figures.
