While Sound of Freedom 2 sounds logical given how popular the movie is, the complicated rights situation makes it far from a sure thing.
Recently, Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde teased a potential sequel to the breakout hit of the summer, but making a Sound of Freedom 2 may be easier said than done. Variety reports that despite the huge financial success of the film ($178 million on $14.5 million budget), many parties could claim the right to produce a sequel. Monteverde has only secured the rights to make one film about Tim Ballard.
Mike Ilitch Jr., the producer, owns Ballard’s life rights and could theoretically make a follow-up film. It’s possible, and maybe even likely, that Illitch (who’s not listed as a production on Sound Of Freedom) will team up with Monteverde or Angel Studios to make a sequel (alongside Jim Caviezel), but it’s less clear than if a traditional Hollywood studio had funded the film. Angel Studios is believed to own the rights to Sound Of Freedom, but not Ballard’s rights. Variety hypothesizes the studio could create a spin-off in lieu of a traditional follow-up – if necessary. It is unusual for a film to be so popular among the general public. The film reminds me of the 1970s cult classic
Billy Jack which was similarly financed by major studios, dumped and then released independently with a boffo box-office (and sequels). All involved would do well to pool their resources. I don’t think a Sound Of Freedom sequel could work without Monteverde, Angel, and Caviezel. The wrong mix of actors could limit its appeal. As for
