Netflix’s Fair Play trailer finds Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich becoming tangled in a wicked web on their way to the top.
Some people will do anything to move up the corporate ladder regardless of who gets hurt. Director/writer Chloe Domont gives a 21st-century spin to classic corporate thrillers from the eighties and nineties. Imagine a movie like Disclosure from a female perspective or if the Michael Douglas character happened to be a raving psychopath. In Fair Play
, an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat hedge fund pushes a young couple’s relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement. Domont directs from a script she wrote, with Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton, Dickensian, Snatch) starring as the crumbling couple. Eddie Marsan, who starred in The World’s End as well as 21Grams, also stars in the trailer for Netflix’s FairPlay about a young couple falling in love. Emily receives a promotion shortly after she and Luke get engaged at the hedge fund they both work for. As Emily makes moves, she leaves Luke and their relationship in her wake. What starts as fake enthusiasm on Luke’s part slowly turns into jealousy. As their union starts to deteriorate, the brass reveals their sinister motivations.
“It was a story that was burning inside of me and a story I couldn’t not tell,” the director told Netflix in an interview conducted earlier this year. “I wanted to reckon with some unresolved feelings I had in the past, specifically dating men who I felt were threatened by either my ambition or any little bits of accomplishments.”
The film is Domont’s way of sounding the alarm. She said that “These dynamics should not be normalized,”. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray attended a screening of Fair Play during this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Chris Bumbray’s 9/10 review describes Fair play as a
“slick, taut thriller with some thriller elements baked into it.” It’s probably one of the most entertaining films I’ve seen this year at Sundance.” What do you think of Netflix’s Fair play trailer? Let us know what you think in the comments below.Fair Play opens in select theaters on
