Barbie and Oppenheimer had tremendous second week holds while Haunted Mansion becomes the latest Disney under-performer
As expected, Barbie remained on top of the box office for a second week in a row with an impressively small drop off of just 43% for a second week take of $93 million and a domestic total of $351.4 million. This is in addition to the massive global take, which has already reached over $700 million. It won’t break the record for the fastest movie to reach one billion dollars globally. That record belongs to Avengers Endgame at only 5 days. But it will certainly cross that magical landmark that only 52 other films have ever crossed in the next week or so. If Top Gun Maverick saved the movie theaters last season, Barbie will make sure that they stay lit this year. Once the first trailer for Barbie was released,
we knew it would be a big hit. Although the trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer looked amazing, many of us were worried that Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer, would be a film that few people would want to sit through. The hype surrounding Barbenheimer helped it to have a strong opening, but the film’s performance this week has shown that it is still going strong. It took in $46.2 million, and the domestic total was $174 million. Audiences are flocking to a film which demands a big screen experience. Christopher Nolan makes sure that his films have a feeling to them that they must be experienced and not just seen. That is why people are willing to get out to theaters and see his movies instead of waiting for home video/ streaming. The same can not be said for Disney, who have pivoted to embracing their streaming service above all else. This is why the mouse house has struggled to get their films into theaters. The
Haunted mansion , which was updated in 2015, only managed to open with $24.2 million. If the movie had gotten better reviews, perhaps more people would’ve gone to see it in theaters. But sadly, this was a very mediocre film that audiences seem aware they can watch in time for Halloween on Disney+. I love streaming, but right now we’re in a weird time where studios aren’t sure how to make their theatrical releases work with their streaming services. Until they figure it out – as Disney is finding out every week – audiences will just wait. You can read Chris Bumbray’s 5/10 review here. Sound Of Freedom which continued its insanely successful independent release, losing just 37% of its $12.4 million weekend take. This is almost $2 million more than Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning part one landed this weekend. I don’t believe anyone predicted that Jim Caviezel would win the box office war between him and Tom Cruise. Here is Chris Bumbray’s 6/10 review of Sound Of Freedom. A24 is a studio that has earned a reputation for producing quality entertainment. The holdover films occupy spots seven through nine: Indiana Jayne and the Dial of Destiny with a $4 million addition to its $167,000,000 domestic total, Elemental
with a $3.4 million addition to its $144.9,000,000 total, and Insidious The Red Door with a $3.1 million addition to its $78,000,000 total. The Bollywood release
Rocky air Rani Kii Prep Kahaani- with $1.3 million takes tenth. Did you go to the theaters this past weekend? How many times have I seen Barbie and Oppenheimer? (It’s two each for me). Let us know what you think in the comments. Don’t forget to vote on our weekly poll, where we ask which Margot Robbie movie is your favorite.
