Trailer: Writer/director Stewart Thorndike’s Bad Things, set in an abandoned hotel, is coming to Shudder and AMC+
Writer/director Stewart Thorndike made her feature debut with the 2014 psychological horror film Lyle, which showed what happened when “a mother’s grief over the death of her toddler leads to horror.” It was said that Thorndike was “developing two more female-driven psychological horror films” that would stand alongside Lyle to form a trilogy “about the power of motherhood”. The second chapter of that trilogy has now been released. Thorndike’s Bad Things is set to be released on Shudder and AMC+ streaming platforms on August 181001010th. A trailer can be viewed in the embed above. Ruthie Nodd inherits a hotel from her grandmother. With bad childhood memories threatening the surface, Ruthie is determined to sell the property and never return. Cal drags Ruthie to the hotel in hopes of restoring it to its former glory. The couple is joined by their friend Maddie, and the mysterious grifter Fran whose seduction threatens a wedge to be driven between them. As the friends dance, cook, flirt, and fight up and down the halls of the hotel, they begin to find themselves indelibly entwined in the hotel’s seductive embrace and start doing bad things to each other. The film stars Gayle Rankin (
Glow) as Ruthie, Annabelle Dexter-Jones (Under the Silver Lake
) as Fran, Hari Nef (Barbie) as Cal, and Rad Pereira (The Creator) as Maddie. Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles) is also in the cast.Thorndike provided the following statement: “Bad Things is the second film in a trilogy about the power of motherhood. It’s a story of unrequited love between a mother, and her daughter. It’s not polite. I wanted to destroy the societal norms about what a mother-daughter relationship is – not subtle and loving, passive healers, but epic, frightening, and active. It’s a celebration for this first primal connection and how blurry and complicated it can be. It’s especially true of an unrequited love. The story takes place in The Comley Hotel where women do bad stuff. Instead of seeing women being treated badly, we see them doing bad things. I wanted to create an environment where this could be explored. I wanted to create a space that was separate from the male-dominated world. The hotel is feminine, with mauve and brass, and increasingly blood-red and milky colors. It is haunted by the ghosts of women that fell under its spell. Where are the female Jack Torrances and Travis Bickles? Ruthie Nodd answers this question in Bad things
. The Shining unleashed the patriarchal monster that is Bad things. Bad things retaliates with rage. Let rage reign.“I haven’t seen Lyle
, but Bad Things looks interesting to me. I will definitely check it out on Shudder. What did you think of Bad Things‘s trailer? Will you be watching the movie on Shudder, AMC+ or both? Please let us know what you think by leaving a message below.
