REVIEW: After being forced to drive a mysterious passenger at gunpoint, a man finds himself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse where it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems.PLOT:
Sympathy For The Devil will constantly play with your expectations from the opening frame. Every piece of information is designed to manipulate your thinking. This is why the film is so fascinating, even when there is not much happening. It allows you to examine small moments that can snowball into bigger ones. But aren’t those some of the best?Like most cat-and-mouse thrillers, there’s a lot of reliance on the chemistry between the two leads in
Sympathy for The Devil
. But aren’t they the best?Like many cat-and-mouse films, the chemistry between the leads is a big part of
Sympathy For the Devil
. Nic Cage and Joel Kinnaman are in these roles. Cage’s performance may seem odd to begin with, but as the film progresses, it becomes more believable. You have to like Cage’s unhinged performance for it to work, but I was, so it worked. Cage does strike a subtler chord in some of the more intense scenes. I also love his Boston accent, which comes and go in the heated moments but has a huge impact. Joel Kinnaman’s performance as The Driver is layered and will only get better with repeated viewings. The less said about his character, the more entertaining the film will be. Cage can be heard talking to the police officer who just pulled them over, or to a waitress talking about the cheese on a tuna melting. Cage’s conversation about anything is gold. I could have watched him interact with people the entire time. Las Vegas is always a great choice for a setting because it has its own personality. This is more on the outskirts but the glimpses really help to create an interesting visual language, whether through reflections or downright neon signs.Sympathy for the Devil will likely play entirely different on a rewatch. These are the films that I find most fascinating, as they allow me to analyze them in a new way. You’ll never have another experience like the first time you watched it. This film is still a good watch. This, to me says that the twist was well-thought out and executed. It’s a natural progression in the story, so I can’t even call it a twist. If you want to see Nic Cage in a more heightened state, you will enjoy the film. Be prepared for a lot of slower moments, and lots of talking between the Driver & Passenger. Some story beats will make you squirm. This is a character-driven film where the actors have a lot of room to play. And sometimes that’s all you need to make for an interesting time at the movies.SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL
