James Mangold says his scrapped Boba Fett movie was a borderline R-rated spaghetti western that probably scared the shit out of Lucasfilm.
Star Wars certainly took inspiration from spaghetti westerns, but James Mangold was planning on fully embracing the genre for his Boba Fett movie.
James Mangold was tapped to direct the Boba Fett movie back in 2018 as well as co-write the script with Simon Kinberg. The project never materialized, but Mangold teased the vision of the movie in a podcast called Happy Sad Confused. Mangold said, “At that point I was doing it, I was probably scaring everyone out of their wits.“. “But it was probably more of an R-rated single planet spaghetti Western. If I had made it, they probably wouldn’t have been able to embrace Baby Yoda. It didn’t really belong in the world I was kind of envisioning.“
In a different world, we may have seen James Mangold’s Boba Fett film, but the failure of Solo A Star Wars Story caused Lucasfilm to scrape the project. Mangold explained, “In an instant of corporate realignment, or whatever happened with Han Solo, they suddenly decided that they wouldn’t be making pictures like this, and the streaming opportunities presented themselves“. “I listened to Ennio all day and all night while typing away. I don’t think it would have ever happened. I’m not sure it was in anyone’s plans, what I was thinking.“
Although James Mangold wasn’t able to get the Boba Fett movie off the ground five years ago, he has returned to Lucasfilm for a second chance at the franchise. Mangold will direct a film about the origins the Force. This was announced at the Star Wars Celebration. Mangold stated that the movie takes place 25,000-years before Episode 4,, and it is about the discovery of Force,. This new project, unlike Boba Fett’s spaghetti western influence, will be inspired by 1950s biblical epics. Mangold said, “I’ve been working on a Cecil B DeMille-style film about the arrival the Force. It’s a sort of Ten Commandments[Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm] or Star War-kinda like a Cecil B DeMille movie about the arrival.
