In this episode of Scene Breakdown we examine the famous vault heist scene from Mission: Impossible.
Die Hard. In either case, it’s impossible to mention iconic action films without mentioning the vault heist in 1996’s Mission: Impossible. Ethan (Tom Cruise) works as a secret agent with the Impossible Missions Force. He is facing his biggest challenge yet and only has a few loyal friends to trust. Ethan must break into the vault of a maximum-security facility to steal a floppy disk that could save the day. But, of course, things are never that easy. This scene has a visual and audio intensity that is unmatched in any of the films before it. Cruise’s acting skills and the sound design are the mainstays of this scene, which has no music. The scene is so intense you can hear a penny drop. Or, rather, a blade. The scene is said to have been difficult to shoot because Cruise would often lean off-balance while he was suspended from an air conditioning duct. Cruise was infamous for putting loose change and pennies in his shoes in order to keep his balance. The vault is known for its minimalist and sleek design. According to the filmmakers the vault was intentionally modeled to look like the interior of the ship from 2001 A Space Odyssey, and we think it looks pretty good.
