Whether it’s the questionable FX, the lead star’s very controversial dalliances, or just audiences being burned one too many times by Comic Book Films, there’s one movie that is all anyone can talk about. And look, I get it. This production was more chaotic than any other movie we’ve ever covered. More people left and came back due to creative differences. You’ll want to go back and watch The Flash if you haven’t already. This is where the spoilers are.
Warner Brothers tried getting a
Flash movie off the ground in the late 80’s with comic writer Jeph Loeb being brought in to write the screenplay. David S Goyer, who wrote, directed and produced a new Flash in 2004, was the first to sign on. After impressing executives with his Batman Begins screenplay, he was chosen as the leading candidate. Goyer approached Ryan Reynolds about the role of Wally West after working with him on Blade Trinity. Wally West was to be the main Flash with Barry Allen playing a supporting role. Shawn Levy, director of Night at the Museum, was brought in to direct the film with a script written by Chris Brancato. Shawn Levy stepped down from the director’s seat due to scheduling conflicts with Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. In the middle of this, George Miller announced Justice league: Mortal
, with Adam Brody cast as The Flash. Craig Wright wrote the screenplay, while David Dobkin directed. After the 2007 Writer’s Strike and even more re-writing of the script, the Green Lantern team, Greg Berlanti Marc Guggenheim Michael Green, was hired to write the new story for The Flash. You can imagine what happened once Green Lantern hit the world.Things got serious after Warner Brothers launched their DC Comics Universe with Man Of Steel. The Flash, along with Wonder Woman and Aquaman, was announced in July 2013 for a solo film. The plan was to release the film in 2016. By October 2014, the team was still no closer to a release date, so it was again pushed back, this time to March 2018. Okay, not THAT part yet, I mean his casting. It’s not THAT part, it’s his casting. Snyder was able to cast The Flash easily, as he had seen the film Perks of Being a Wallflower and knew exactly who he wanted. Ezra Miller’s eclectic performance had impressed the audience, and Snyder saw in him the perfect Barry. Although it was an odd choice, Ezra Miller’s performance as Barry is often a standout, whether in the Justice League or on his own. And while they may have had their Flash, they still needed someone to guide the character to the big screen.Warner Brothers was so interested in getting director James Wan involved with their Superhero Universe, that they offered him the choice of making either a solo film for
The Flash or Aquaman
. He chose Aqua Man, so they had to find another actor for the film. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller may have even directed the draft. But they instead chose to work on Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Writer Seth Grahme-Smith, after having successfully made the jump to Hollywood with films like Dark Shadows and even The Lego Batman Movie, boarded the project as a first-time director. As has been stated, he left due to creative disagreements. Rick Famuyiwa, who was still using Grahame-Smith’s script, was hired as director. Kiersey was his first choice to play Iris West, as he had worked with her on Dope. Clemons won the role over Rita Ora and Lucy Boynton. Miller’s commitments with another Warner Brother franchise Fantastic Beasts delayed The flash . The studio decided that the film would be delayed indefinitely, so they rewrote the script. They hired
Joby HALDER. Warner went a bit crazy in courting directors. Matthew Vaugh was offered the job, but turned it down for various reasons. Marc Webb, Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele were also offered, but declined. Despite this, Warner announced that summer at Comic Con that the film was still happening and would be titled: Flashpoint. The next update on the film wouldn’t happen until January of 2018 when Spider-man Homecoming writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein came aboard as writers and directors. The filming was supposed to start in February 2019, but was again delayed because of Miller’s obligations with the
Fantastic Beasts franchise, this time The Secrets of Dumbledore. Here’s where things start to get strange. Ezra Miller and Grant Morrison, a renowned comics writer, collaborated on a new script. The studio rejected the new script but asked Miller to remain on as The Flash. The studio rejected the script, but asked Miller to stay on as The Flash. Christina Hodson was hired by the studio to do a second pass on Joby’s Harold’s script after they were impressed with her work on Birds of Prey. The final screenwriters to be credited were these two. The film was signed by Andy Muschietti, his sister Barbara and his producing partner. Production was again delayed due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. This gave the film more time to develop, as it was announced in June that Michael Keaton will be returning to the role that made him famous: Bruce Wayne/Batman. Keaton is a joy to watch in the Batsuit. Ben Affleck will also reprise his role as Batman. Affleck said that he enjoyed playing the character because he felt like a real Batman. He also knew how to play each scene. He’s also said that it was a nice finish for his Batman, so whether we see him again, may be up to more multiverse shenanigans.Sasha Calle made history by being the first Latina to portray Supergirl. She beat out other actors such as Rachel Zegler, and Bruna Marquezine to get the part. It was a great choice, and she is a standout in the movie. This is a totally different look from anything she had in the comics. It feels modern and cool. Barry is struggling to balance his life when he accidentally discovers that he has the ability to go back in time. He uses his newfound power to stop the death of his mother Nora. When he returns to present day, the world has changed. Batman is much older now and Superman does not exist. Barry must team up with Bruce and Bruce’s alternate self to fix the timeline. We get some really interesting cameos. It gets crazy. While Billy Crudup was originally cast as Henry Allen in Justice league he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with T
he morning show. Ron Livingston, Office space
, fills the role perfectly. Maribel Verdu plays his mother Nora.
Both Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Henry Cavill’s Superman are featured, though Cavill’s is mostly CGI. Jason Momoa, who plays Aquaman, also appeared in a scene after the credits when Barry was telling him about his latest adventures. Originally, Ray Fisher’s Cyborg would have been featured more prominently. After a public spat with Walter Hamada (then-Warner Bros president), he refused to participate in any productions under Hamada. As is, his character is diminished to mere references. And in a nice way of calling back to the beginning of Snyder’s DC venture, Michael Shannon’s General Zod returns. He gets less screentime in Man of Steel but he still manages to step into Zod’s role. Antje Traue reprised her role of Faora-Ul in a blink-and you’ll-miss it cameo. Temuera’s Thomas Curry also appears in the alternate time line when Barry is searching for Arthur. Nic Cage’s Superman fights a giant spiderlike creature just as Kevin Smith described it in his Superman lives
script. It’s a crazy scene and I wish I could share it with you now. I was lucky enough to be able to watch the film on the WB Lot with the Muschiettis, but this scene was not included. The scene was originally filmed with Michael Keaton but it is clear that they never intended to have him in the actual scene. George Clooney stunned the world when he returned to the role that he once lamented. This wasn’t the end of the film that was originally attached. As can be seen in several set photos, the original had Michael Keaton exiting his vehicle. Then, when Black Adam made Henry Cavill’s Superman return, they shot another ending with Keaton and Calle. After Peter Safran and James Gunn became the DC Cinematic Universe, they reshot the ending once again when it was decided Cavill’s Superman would not be returning for a long time. Why Clooney was chosen is still yet to be revealed, but with Andy Muschietti being announced as the director of Batman: The Brave and the Bold
, I’m sure we’ll find out soon.
And this is where we need to address the Ezra Miller stuff.Because while filming took place in England from April to October of 2021, its star would have a very tumultuous 2022. They were first arrested in Hawaii after a fight at a Karoake Bar. The officers accused the actor of committing a crime because they misgender the non-binary actor. After Miller and his accomplices barged into a couple’s bedroom, they threatened them. A separate Hawaiian couple then received a restraining orders against Miller. A video that surfaced in April 2020 allegedly shows Ezra strangling and throwing a woman to the ground. Miller’s Vermont Farm is another place where a number of unseemly incidents were alleged. I think we’ve covered everything necessary to show that Miller really screwed up. Miller was given two options by Warner: either they could hire professional help and do limited press to release the film as planned, or they could refuse the help and be excluded from any press and his role would be recast. There had even been rumors that the film would be relegated to the HBO Max streaming service to lighten the financial burden.Instead, Warner decided they would do a more grassroots campaign and rely on word of mouth. The word of mouth was very positive after the early screenings. It seemed like the film would be a big hit, and even received endorsements from people such as Stephen King and Tom Cruise. We don’t yet have an idea of the worldwide box office for this film, but we do know that it won’t be pretty. When you consider that The Flash was filmed on a budget exceeding $200 Million, it’s hard to imagine that the film will do much more than cover its cost. Warner clearly hoped by keeping Ezra out of the press that audiences would be more apt to overlook his dalliances. This proved to not be the case, as the film brought in even less than the abysmal projections. While this number is sure to change, The flash is currently sitting at a 66% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Flash is a funny, fast-paced film that is rated as one of the top DC movies. Warner is going through a very difficult time. The company’s window to make things right is rapidly shrinking as they haven’t had any real success in the last few years with their DC Films. David Zaslav has made several controversial decisions, such as shelving the finished Batgirl film and getting rid of HBO favorites like Westworld. It’s hard to imagine that we’ll have a new president by the time the DCU gets back on track. We know that Peter Safran, James Gunn, and Superman: Legacy will be the first film of the new DCU. But that’s another story. Join us! Saaaame Movie time, saaaame movie channel.
