Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny producer Kathleen Kennedy thinks Phoebe Waller-Bridge could lead a Helena Shaw spin-off.
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny marks Harrison Ford’s final performance as Dr. Henry Walton “Indiana” Jones Jr., the franchise may continue with another character leading future expeditions into the unknown. Helena Shaw is Indy’s goddaughter. In the James Mangold directed sequel, Phoebe Waller Bridge brings the character to live. In my opinion, Helena Shaw is the highlight of the film. The franchise’s future may rest in her capable and talented hands. In a recent interview with Variety, producer Kathleen Kennedy says it’s “entirely possible” for Waller-Bridge to continue the brand.
Speaking with Variety about the new film, its mixed reception, and the franchise’s future, Mangold becomes visibly excited when the outlet broaches the topic of Helena Shaw. Mangold claims that he and the Butterworths, Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, wrote the character for Waller-Bridge. The character includes elements of Marion Ravenwood from the Indy series. When asked about Helena’s future on the silver screen, Mangold quickly shoved the notion aside.
“I’m not interested,” he says. “I refuse. I just can’t. Who could blame Mangold for thinking that one movie was enough? “The amount of Easter eggs, lore, and fan service becomes antithetical at a certain stage. It’s not storytelling anymore. It’s large-scale advertising.”While Mangold isn’t interested in leading Helena Shaw into the throughs of danger for another cinematic excursion, Kathleen Kennedy says it’s
“entirely possible” for Shaw to star in her own film. We’re not having those conversations at this time. We’re just focused on finishing this with Harrison.”Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny stars Harrison Ford as the legendary hero archaeologist, as well as Phoebe Waller-Bridge (
Fleabag), Mads Mikkelsen (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot), Olivier Richters (Black Widow), Ethann Isidore (Mortel), and John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark). James Mangold directed and co-wrote the script alongside Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. How do you feel about the Indiana Jones
franchise continuing with a different character in the lead? We’ll need to wait until Indiana and the Dial of Destiny hits theaters on 30 June to see how the general public reacts to Helena Shaw. There’s not much anyone can do when a corporation feels they are leaving money on the tables by not bleeding out a franchise. I like the idea that another Indy family members will take over the torch. Change is inevitable. We can either embrace change or join the echo-chambers online. Comment below to let us know what you think about Helena Shaw’s movie.
