PLOT: Swiss mountain girl Heidi is abducted by brutal government troops and must defend herself and fight a war against a cheese-fueled machinery of hate.REVIEW: I wasn’t familiar with the Heidi character before Mad Heidi but I know she’s quite ingrained in the childhood of many Europeans. I can only imagine what someone who grew with this character would feel when they saw her kick so much ass. This is a revenge tale more like
Kill bill rather than something you would read to your kids at night. This is exploitation on every level, from a dictator who believes the biggest crime is being lactose-intolerant to a police officer with a specific kink. Alice Lucy is amazing as Heidi, the woman who watches her love die violently in front of her. I wanted to see more of her as a badass, because she doesn’t appear until the film is a little bit further along. She has to train to become the badass Heidi so she doesn’t reach her final form for a good chunk of the movie. This made me want to see a sequel. Because while Mad Heidi
may be the title, we don’t get enough “mad” for my liking.
Casper Van Dien absolutely steals the show as President Meili. He’s chomping on every last bit of scenery. He has a Germanic Swiss accent, which sounds like a mixture between Tommy Wiseau (as in Tommy Wiseau) and Franz. I would have liked to see more of him because his scenes seem to be over way too quickly. I also wanted more interaction between him, and Heidi. The dynamic between him and Heidi isn’t as strong as it should be, despite the fact that he’s a main antagonist. She has a lot of hatred for Kommandant Knorr, (RIP Goat Peter). It’s over-the-top, bombastic, a bit crazy, and a lot of it. I expected nothing less. While I wish it had gone a bit further in some parts, I think most of this is due to the story. When they need to go further with a joke, they do it with skill. The Grindhouse opener almost disarms and sets your expectation low enough so that when you see the beautiful cinematography, and landscapes, it is a pleasant surprise. The filmmakers have taken full advantage of the Swiss Alps, which provide so many jaw-dropping shots. The film has long stretches that are a bit meandering. The violence is pretty extravagant, but I may be a bit of a gore-hound these days. They have an entire training video that perfectly parodies Starship Troopers’ “I am doing my part”. There is still a certain amount of cheese, such as characters appearing out-of-nowhere and sound effects for each major movement. All of this is charming. Fingers crossed that the
Heidi & Klara teased by the film will actually become a reality. This film has already done the hard work of creating a fun-filled world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiZBnymU5w87
