Set in India, The Archies is a live-action twist on the classic cartoon and will come to Netflix in November.
Netflix has released a new trailer for their feature film adaptation of The Archies, adding onto a sort of extended universe. Hopefully this take can fill the Jughead-sized hole Riverdale fans will have once that show concludes this year, although the tone is quite different…
Released during Netflix’s Tudum event, the trailer for The Archies is a nonstop bop, showcasing what looks to be a wealth of wonderfully choreographed dance sequences and hip costumes. Netflix says: “You’ve seen these characters in comics, books, and Riverdale Set in the 60’s, The Archies builds a world that’s both familiar and new.”
Interestingly, the core cast playing Archie, Betty and Veronica are all offspring of legends of the Indian film industry: Agastya Nanda is the son of Amitabh Bachchan, who very much looks like the Indian version of Ray Romano; Khushi Kapoor is the daughter of “first female superstar of Indian cinema” Sridevi; and Suhana Khan is the daughter of the prolific actor Shah Rukh Khan. The cast also includes Vedang Raina, Aditi Segigal, Yuvraj Menda The television series have fared much better, with success coming in the aforementioned
Riverdale, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which itself spawned three TV movies also starring Melissa Joan Hart.Directed by Zoya Akhtar (the wonderful Gully Boy) and co-produced by her own Tiger Baby Films, The Archies grooves to Netflix on November 24th.
