It seems like a great idea — a popular Netflix horror sci-fi series about the dark implications of having technology which is everywhere actually written by an artificially-intelligent algorithm. AI is becoming more prevalent and there is a growing concern that writers and artists will be overtaken by technology. This is a topic that is at the forefront in the current situation around the WGA strike. According to The Hollywood Reporter the creator of
Black mirror
decided that he would dive head-first into this method and try to use AI to create an episode for the next season. Brooker would say, “I typed ‘generate a Black mirror
Episode’ and it came up with something which, at first glance reads plausible, but is shit on second glance. It’s just a mash-up of all the Black mirror episode synopses. Then if you dig a bit more deeply you go, ‘Oh, there’s not actually any real original thought here.’ It’s Mike Yarwood — there’s a topical reference.”AI is a technology that could have a serious impact on the future of entertainment along with deepfakes, and it can only get more advanced. Brooker admits he learned a lot from the experiment, even though he found the results to be ridiculous. Brooker says, “I was aware that I had written lots of episodes where someone said, “Oh, I was inside a computer the whole time.” So I thought that ‘I’m just going to chuck out any sense of what i think a [1970s impressionist]Black mirror
episode is.'” Brooker said, “I was aware that there were many episodes where someone would say, ‘Oh I was inside a machine the whole time. I decided to throw out any sense of Black mirror I thought.'”Having come to this realization, Brooker began thinking, “There’s no use in having anthology shows if you don’t have the courage to break your own rules.” Just a sort of nice, cold glass of water in the face.”
And with that, the sci-fi writer noted that he “stretched the parameters” of what to expect in a Black Mirror episode for the upcoming season.Black Mirror season 6 will be available to stream on Netflix on
